Mazda set to debut new TAKERI concept

Xlarge_mazda-takeri-concept-01_01
Mazda North American Operations is preparing to debut its newest concept, the TAKERI, at the New York International Auto Show. The car is the brand’s first concept vehicle to feature a SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter diesel engine, the second with Mazda’s new SKYACTIV technology, and the third to embody the automaker’s new KODO design theme.

The mid-size sedan features design elements in keeping with the new KODO design strategy, including a more streamlined roofline and swooping hood.
During his keynote address to the Motor Press Guild at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, Takashi Yamanouchi, president of Mazda Motor Corp., described the new design initiative as being inspired by natural movement and power.

“Distinctive design is an integral part of our makeup. Mazda design has been exploring the expression of motion for years. The latest evolution of this design direction, called KODO, which translates as ‘Soul of Motion’, draws inspiration from the strength, beauty and tension shown in the swift movement of animals. KODO captures the harnessed energy of the moment and makes hearts race in those people who see it in our cars,” Yamanouchi said.

The SKYACTIV platform, Mazda’s suite of high-mpg and performance enhancing technologies, is reflected in Mazda’s first 2.2-liter clean diesel SKYACTIV-D engine. Coupled with the i-stop idling stop system, the car can restart the engine in a single cycle, whereas most stop-start systems require two engine cycles. The vehicle has a 0.4-second engine restart time, the fastest for a diesel engine system.

Among the TAKERI’s fuel-conservation features is its capacitor-based regenerative braking system, the i-ELOOP. By converting kinetic energy into electricity during deceleration and storing the power in capacitors, the car uses its own generated power to supply the array of electric equipment. This highly efficient system reduces engine use and improves fuel economy by up to 10 percent.

The Mazda TAKERI concept will make its North American debut next month at the New York International Auto Show.

Weekly Wednesday Car Care Tip

Keys
Today's Weekly Wednesday Car Care Tip is: Add years of service to your ignition switch by lightening up your key chain! If your car key shares a chain with a lot of keys, the weight, combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure.

2012 Mazda2 Her Highway Review: A Fun Little Zoomer

2012_mazda2_2
Who says saving money can’t be fun? Whether you’re a college student, single mom, or long distance commuter looking for an economy car, be sure to put the new 2012 Mazda2 on your test-drive list. With a base price of about $13,980 for the Sport model, it’s more affordable than flashier subcompacts, such as the Mini Cooper and Fiat 500, but it’s just as much fun to drive.

Although the Mazda2 boasts only 100 horsepower, this light little hatchback only weighs about 2200 pounds. So the “little engine that could” feels like it has plenty of power for quickly accelerating up to freeway speed or climbing fairly steep grades. And when you find a stretch of twisting highway, you’ll appreciate the Mazda 2’s sporty suspension that combines MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam axle in the rear.

The 2012 Mazda2 delivers a respectable 29 mpg city and 35-highway miles when outfitted with the manual five-speed transmission. Switch to the four-speed automatic gearbox and the mileage drops slightly to 27 city and 33 highway. So ask yourself: to shift or not to shift?

The 2012 Mazda2 is offered in two trim levels: Sport and Touring. The Sport has 15-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a tilt steering wheel plus a four-speaker CD/MP3 audio system with an auxiliary input jack. Step up to the Touring package and you’ll get 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a rear roof spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, a trip computer, cruise control, upgraded cloth seats, and two additional audio speakers.

As you might expect from a subcompact, there’s not a lot of cargo capacity, but plenty for my Skittles. Fold down the 60/40-split seats, however, and you’ll be able to stash up to 27.8 cubes worth of luggage, camping gear, or a pretty good haul from Marshall’s, Kohls, Target or Walmart.

Standard safety features both trim levels include antilock brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and stability and traction control.

Weekly Wednesday Car Care Tip

Urtutry88539966
It's time for our Weekly Wednesday Car Care Tip! Don’t fill up if you see the tanker: As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs. If you happen to see a gasoline tanker filling the tanks at your local gas station, come back another day or go to a different station.

"MyMazda" Service Application Now Available for Android-Based Devices

- Service App Provides Mazda Owners with Real-Time Information About Their Vehicle -

IRVINE, Calif. (March 12, 2012) - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced the "MyMazda" Service app for Mazda owners with Android-compatible devices.  The app is now available for download at the Google Play Store, formerly known as the Android Market.

"MyMazda," already available on iTunes, was one of the first automotive apps of its kind to provide Mazda owners with real-time information about their vehicle. The free “MyMazda” app provides easy access to service offers personalized to their vehicle, scheduled maintenance reminders, factory maintenance schedules and other information about their vehicle in one simple app.

Home
As Android is the world's No.1 smartphone operating system, the "MyMazda" app is available to more Mazda owners in addition to the app released on iTunes late last year.  The app features the ability to scan vehicle identification numbers (VINs) when adding new vehicles to the application, making the app set-up and personalization process effortless.  Mazda owners can update their contact information and upload personal vehicle photos for each vehicle they register.

Using the vehicle locator feature, locating your vehicle such as in a large parking lot, has become even more convenient using the “MyMazda” app.  Owners can now add photos to the vehicle locator feature, ensuring a quick return to their vehicle utilizing GPS and visual cues in the photos.

Additionally, the "MyMazda" app is linked with the “Mazda Assist” app.  Designed to help Mazda drivers obtain immediate roadside assistance, should they find themselves with a flat tire, out of gas, locked out of their car or in need of a tow due to a mechanical failure.  The app puts drivers directly in touch with a roadside assistance agent who can quickly dispatch reliable and professional roadside assistance to the vehicle's exact location via GPS-enabled technology, anytime.  Drivers are given estimated time of arrival (ETA) and Service Provider information throughout the roadside event.  The “Mazda Assist” app is free download and available on both iTunes and the Google Play Store.

Geneva motor show 2012: Mazda

Mazda-takeri-concept

The Mazda Takeri concept car made its European debut at the 2012 Geneva motor show today and according to Mazda design chief Ikuo Maeda, it will be difficult to spot the difference between it and the all-new Mazda 6 when it launches next year.

Except for futuristic design elements such as the touch open door handles, the Mazda 6 will look virtually identical to the Takeri. 'The 6 needs to have a sexy flavour, and it will follow through the Takeri's simple, yet alluring design,' said Maeda.

The Takeri's sleek lines, built up to form 'moving' waves along the body work, will move the Mazda 6 into a new league. It won't just be taking on Ford Mondeo and VW Passatt rivals but will have the appeal to compete with premium brands, he said.

The Takeri is the second embodiment of Mazda's new dynamic Kodo design language, which debuts on the new CX-5. Next up for the Kodo treatment will be the all new MX-5. Maeda is currently studying how to do this fluidly without diluting the image of the iconic sports car.

The new design will help the car's appeal with a younger generation of drivers, particularly in the US where MX-5 buyers tend to be more mature. 'It has to be fun, and ideally it will be smaller, lighter yet still affordable,' said Maeda.

The weight-loss, which is planned to take the MX-5 below its current 1000kgs, will come from Mazda's Sky active technology, which has been in development since 2006, and will showcase on first the CX-5 and then the new Mazda 6.

Sky active has the potential to boost fuel economy and lower co2 emissions by 30%, according to Hiroyuki Matsumoto, vice president of research and development at Mazda Europe. This is achieved via a combination of body, chassis and engine weight reduction, enhanced transmission, and new engine design.
