Review: 2013 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring

The Mazda CX-9 seems to get overshadowed by the newer, smaller CX-5 crossover, but this seven-passenger SUV is worthy of a close look if you need three-row seating.

Three years ago I drove a CX-9 to Colorado and back, and that trip was a revealing experience. The vehicle was quiet and comfortable on the road, handled with carlike agility and the spacious interior was as well appointed as a luxury sedan. Now, for 2013, some minor updates and a new front-end design enhance the package.

The CX-9’s chassis is derived from the Mazda6, and its basic architecture has a lot in common with the Ford Edge. This three-row SUV is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. Prices range from $29,875 to $36,375.

I recently got reacquainted with the top all-wheel-drive Grand Touring model. The base price was $36,375 and the sticker price was $39,605. Some of its competitors include the Honda Pilot, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia.

One of the most obvious, and welcome, changes is the addition of a new nose with Mazda’s KODO, or "Soul of Motion," design. The smiling face from previous years is thankfully gone.

The new front gives the CX-9 a more flowing, unified shape. The steeply sloping windshield and tapered roofline are perfect accents. The test car’s 20-inch wheels and low-profile tires add a muscular touch and improve cornering. Low-profile tires often deliver a harsh ride, but that was not the case with the Mazda.

The interior looks a little dated, but carefully executed styling details such as the tasteful integration of wood-grain trim and satin-finished accents makes it attractive. The front seats were nicely contoured, and the second-row seat moves forward for easy access to the third seat. It also slides forward to enhance legroom for third-row passengers. The rear cargo area is substantial when the third seat is folded down.

The Mazda’s door panels have curved ribs that mimic those of the center stack, and power window switches are mounted on the ribs.

The Grand Touring comes with a blind-spot monitor, backup camera and heated front seats. Popular options include the navigation system, Bose stereo and a moonroof. The blind-spot monitor is an invaluable partner in freeway traffic. A small icon in the outside rearview mirror lights up when a vehicle is alongside and it issues a warning beep if you use the turn signal.

The 273-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 has very little vibration and the six-speed transmission’s shifts are nearly seamless. When coasting down hill, the transmission automatically downshifts at the slightest touch of the brakes, helping to hold the vehicle’s speed.

Fuel economy is rated at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway.

Safety items include front, side and side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control and vehicle stability control.

Price
The base price of the test vehicle was $36,375. Options included a power sunroof, Bose stereo and navigation system. The sticker price was $39,605.

Warranty
Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The Mazda CX-5 is set to impress at the Bangkok Motor Show

Mazda Sales (Thailand) managing director Choichi Yuki said the company will also adopt a new booth design at the show.

He said the new booth will reflect Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" concept and clearly deliver the true Mazda identity, presenting visitors with a new experience.

"The CX-5 is the first Mazda model to features Mazda's expressive 'KODO' design language first applied in the Mazda Shinari concept car. The Mazda CX-5 has been taking over the global market with its outstanding design as well as eco-friendliness, and Mazda is now ready to launch it in Thailand later this year," he revealed.

The CX-5 is based on the Mazda Minagi concept that was displayed at last year's Bangkok Motor Show. The Minagi features the 'KODO: Soul of Motion' design language that expresses movement with forceful vitality and speed as the design theme for Mazda's upcoming models.

Car Tip of the Week: Check for uneven wear

V

Check tires for uneven wear. If you’ve maintained tire inflation properly, uneven wear may indicate the need for a wheel realignment. It can also mean improperly operating brakes or shocks, a bent wheel, internal tire damage, or worn bushings.

Car Tip of the Week: Don’t let tools mar your car’s finish

V

If you plan to service and make repairs to your car, invest in a fender cover. It drapes over your fender, providing a safe place to rest your tools without causing scratches. It will also prevent your belt buckle from marring your paint as you lean into the engine compartment to work.

Car Tip of the Week: Wash in winter, too

V

If you rarely wash your car during messy winter weather, you are not alone. The cars you see on the road make it obvious that lots of folks figure, “Why bother? The car is going to look awful the next time I drive it.” The problem with this thinking is that washing is more important in the winter than other times of the year. All that sand, slush, and ice mixed with road salt is exactly what makes your car rust. The fastest corrosion occurs when the temperature repeatedly rises above and then falls below freezing. Especially during the messy months, be sure to rinse the undercarriage and hard-to-reach areas that are susceptible to rust, such as the bumpers and inside the wheel wells. If the temperature outside is going to stay above freezing long enough for your car and driveway to dry, fill a bucket with warm water and tackle the job at home. If not, pay a visit to your local car wash and be sure they dry the car thoroughly.

Car Tip of the Week: Touch up nicks sooner rather than later

Vvv

Touch-up paint won’t adhere well to rust. So be sure to keep some matching touch-up paint on hand so you can touch up any minor nicks, often found around door edges, before rust has a chance to form.

Car Tip of the Week: Renew fabric upholstery

Spraying fabric car seats and carpets with a fabric protectant, such as Scotchgard, will make them resist dirt and stains, and make them easier to clean. Thoroughly clean the fabrics before using one of these products and then test the product on an inconspicuous place to be sure the treatment will not discolor the fabric.

Mazda3, CX-5 earn IIHS Top Safety Picks

Mazda technologies like SkyActiv-Body and SkyActiv-Chassis, plus ultra-high-tensile steel, six airbags, "crusable" brake and accelerator pedal assembly and collapsible steering column have helped the 2013 Mazda3 and 2014 Mazda CX-5 win Top Safety Pick laurels from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It's the second year in a row for the Mazda3.

The accolade is earned by receiving "Good" marks for frontal moderate overlap crashes, side and rear impact crashes, and tests of roof strength. Remember, the small overlap test that the IIHS commenced in August 2012 has lately tripped up some makers who have excellent safety reputations.

The Mazda3 and CX-5 join offerings like the Dodge Dart, Hyundai Elantra, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Subaru Forester among the 117 vehicles so far declared Top Safety Picks – which is different than the 13 named Top Safety Picks+, mind you – for this year.

Car Tip of the Week: Preserve door and window seals

Wipe a rubber protectant (such as Armor-All) or silicone on door and window weatherstripping to keep it in good condition. Don’t use an oil based product, such as WD-40, because the oil will damage the rubber. Regular cleaning and treatment of your car’s weatherstripping will also lessen the likelihood of your door sticking to its rubber seal in cold weather, a common cause of damage to the rubber.

Driving Tip of the Week: Keep an auto log to catch early warning signs that something isn’t right

Keep a pad and pencil in the glove compartment and use them to record your gas fill-ups and mileage. If you notice that your gas mileage worsens, mention it to your service man. It may be an early warning sign that something may be wrong with your car.
