Big thanks to the team for helping Joan to get her daughter the perfect Christmas gift!
" Mr. Sugiharto made buying a used car a very pleasant experience. By the time I found Russell & Smith I was exhausted with bad experiences from other dealers so my guard was up; I was tired of running around Houston to find things not as other dealers had described them. I explained my "wish list" of things I needed in a used car, which was to be a surprise Christmas present for our daughter, to Mr. Sugiharto and my price. I was not playing games and I expected the same from whomever I was doing business with, just tell me if you can do it or not. That's exactly what I got AND MORE! Mr. Sugiharto was honest, knowledgeable, prompt, maintained excellent communication (without being a pest). When I looked up reviews on Russell and Smith Mazda I knew I had made the right choice. Not to mention even our salesman, Mr. Sugiharto, had awesome reviews! When we arrived to pick up our new "used" car all the paperwork was in order and the process was quick (less than 30 minutes). We are so pleased to have done business with Russell and Smith Mazda and would highly recommend them!" -Joan M.

Mazda Going to Show Off Their Vehicles At The Tokyo Auto Salon
The Tokyo Motor Show is a stage that is intended for the world’s manufacturers of vehicles to show off their production models of vehicles, but the Tokyo Auto Salon gives designers and engineers the ability to stretch out their legs and show off some custom hardware. This year, Mazda will be taking 10 special models to the Tokyo Auto Salon, including a custom version of their recently released CX-5.
The new Axela Skyactiv will also be put on display, which will have a body kit of its own, along with a sharp looking set of wheels. Visitors will also be able to get a closer look at a pair of customer Roadster models, as well. I am definitely liking the sound of this.

Long-Term Test: 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv
With its logical interior, standout looks and best-in-class driving dynamics, the Mazda 3 has been a longtime favorite of the Inside Line staff. We've recommended it to family and friends and even put our own money down on a few.
In a review of the 2010 Mazda 3 s Five-Door Grand Touring we let you in on a little slice of our personal lives. "Three chest-thumping, horsepower-hungry car guys who test-drive new cars for a living here at Inside Line all choose the economical Mazda 3 Five-Door hatch to park in their own driveways."
Unfortunately, not all is perfect in the land of the 3. Both the 2.5- and 2.0-liter engines made good power, but they were crude and returned substandard real-world fuel economy. The car's five-speed automatic wasn't helping anything either.
Mazda's solution to this problem is a new family of engines and transmissions it's calling Skyactiv. In our first drive of the 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv-G Grand Touring we wrote, "The fuel mileage is for real with the new drivetrains, and unlike most other approaches to maximizing mpg, they don't put a damper on the fun. Instead, it's quite the opposite. The Mazda 3 has never been better."
The fuel economy is real? The Mazda 3 has never been better? We knew right then we had to add one to our long-term fleet, and now we have in the form of a 2012 Mazda 3 i Five-Door Grand Touring.
What We Got
There are two engine options available for the 2012 Mazda 3 and for perhaps the first time, we didn't get the big one. A 2.5-liter, 167-horsepower inline-4 is available in the S trim and it is, admittedly, the one we want. It is not, however, the volume seller, nor is it the one that is set to take on the 40-mpg club head-on.
No, that motor is the 2.0-liter 155-hp inline-4 that currently sits in our Mazda 3 i. With the new six-speed automatic transmission (finally), this engine earned an EPA-estimated 39 highway and 28 city mpg. For comparison, that's 4 mpg better city fuel economy than the 2012 Mazda 2 with a manual transmission. This powertrain returns 40 mpg in the 2012 Mazda 3 sedan, but sedans are boring and less functional. We'll gladly give up 1 mpg for more cargo space and better looks.
Our 2012 Mazda 3 Grand Touring comes pretty loaded from the factory with a tilt-and-telescoping wheel, leather steering wheel, leather seats and door panel inserts, eight-way power driver seat, heated front seats, 16-inch wheels, 60/40-split folding seats, a 265-watt Bose stereo with 10 speakers, Bluetooth audio and phone and a full-color compact navigation system. Total price for all that plus the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine and Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic came to $23,595.
Beyond that we opted for an interior lighting kit for $200, an auto-dim rearview mirror for $275 and the Technology package for $1,400. That last one lumps together blind-spot monitoring, Sirius Satellite Radio, adaptive automatic bi-xenon lights and rain-sensing front wipers. It's hardly a necessary option, but we figured we wanted to see how good a Mazda 3 can get.
All together, this 2012 Mazda 3 i Five-Door Grand Touring in Indigo Lights Metallic with Dune interior stickers for $25,520. Mazda provided us with the vehicle for this test.
Why We Got It
When recommending the Mazda 3 to friends, the conversation frequently ended with just one question. "Seems nice, but does it get good gas mileage?" Our response was always, "Sort of." Now we have a chance to see if that weak point has been fixed without neutering the Mazda 3's other more interesting features.
We expect it will get better mileage, but can the 2012 Mazda 3 with Skyactiv technology deliver on the near 40-mpg promise? That will be a tough number to hit, although our most recent long-term test of the Mazda 2 confirmed that it delivered exactly what the EPA rating said it would.
We'll be tracking that story over the next 12 months and 20,000 miles to find out. Follow along on our Long-Term Road Test blog.
Current Odometer: 1,148
Best Fuel Economy: 41.7
Worst Fuel Economy: 23

115 winners of 2012 Top Safety Pick
Stronger roofs lead to another record year for award
ARLINGTON, VA — The list of winners of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award is longer than ever this year, with vehicles in nearly every size category the Institute evaluates earning accolades. From minicars to sedans to pickups, consumers have a record number of choices among 2012 models.
In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, 5 minivans, and 3 pickups earn Top Safety Pick. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in Institute evaluations. The ratings, which cover all 4 of the most common kinds of crashes, help shoppers pick vehicles that offer the highest levels of crash protection. Because the federal government now requires all 2012 and later passenger vehicles to have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid loss-of-control crashes, ESC no longer is a requirement to win as it was in prior years.
The winners' circle includes 18 new recipients for 2012, while 97 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award carry over to 2012.
"For the second year running a record number of models qualify," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "It's tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority."
That commitment to protecting people in crashes is evident in the fast pace of design improvements automakers have made during the past year. Initially 66 vehicles qualified for last year's award as less-than-perfect rollover ratings held back many contenders. Later the number climbed to 100 as manufacturers redesigned roofs to make them stronger or introduced new models to win. The Institute's rolling test schedule allows for recognition of additional winners throughout the year, so many 2012 models qualified for a 2011 Top Safety Pick.
Again this year every major automaker has at least one winner. Subaru remains the only manufacturer with the distinction of earning awards for every model it builds. Subaru picks up 5 awards, including one for the redesigned Impreza, a small car.
Toyota/Lexus/Scion has 15 winners for 2012, more than any other auto manufacturer. General Motors is next in line with 14, followed by Volkswagen/Audi with 13, and Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura with 12 awards apiece.
Honda improves: Ten of the 18 new additions are Honda/Acura models, including the midsize Accord sedan, which hasn't earned Top Safety Pick since the Institute toughened criteria to win the 2010 award by adding a test to assess roof strength in a rollover crash.
Vehicles rated good for rollover protection have roofs more than twice as strong as the current federal standard requires. The Institute estimates that such roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 percent compared with roofs meeting the minimum requirement. A new federal standard for roof strength will phase in beginning with 2013 models.
Roofs on the 2009 Honda CR-V and 2010 Pilot scored marginal ratings in prior Institute tests, while earlier models of the Accord, CR-Z, Fit, and Insight rated acceptable. Now all of these 2012 models earn good ratings and Top Safety Pick.
"Honda/Acura deserves credit for most-improved status," Lund says. "The automaker buckled down and upgraded roofs on 10 models that missed winning last year because of rollover protection. Now, the automaker has winners in the minicar, small car, midsize car, small SUV, midsize SUV, minivan, and large pickup categories."
Another midsize sedan, the Toyota Camry, earns its first-ever Top Safety Pick. Last year, the Camry missed the mark because of a marginal rating for seat/head restraints. The Toyota Yaris also earns its first Top Safety Pick award. Toyota upgraded the roof and seat/head restraints of the 4-door hatchback model to win. Good ratings secure the Yaris a spot alongside 3 other minicars, the Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, and Honda Fit, as 2012 winners.
"It's great to see the Accord and Camry, 2 of the top-selling midsize cars in the U.S. market, join the Top Safety Pick ranks this year," Lund says. "The Accord previously won the 2009 award but has been missing from the list since then."
With fuel efficiency and reduced emissions on many buyers' wish lists, the winners' circle includes more green choices. Toyota's all-new Prius v is among them. Roomier than the original, the v hybrid brings to 15 the number of winners available as hybrids. The plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, winners in 2011, also earn this year's award.
For drivers who need to haul loads, the Ford F-150, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tundra are good choices in the large pickup category. Small pickups continue to be shut out. None the Institute has evaluated qualify for the award.
"When we launched Top Safety Pick in 2005, consumers had 11 models to pick from. Six years later, finding a winner that fits most budgets and lifestyles is easy," Lund says. "It's a testament to the commitment automakers have made to going above and beyond minimum safety standards."
About the award: The Institute awarded the first Top Safety Pick to 2006 models and then raised the bar the next year by requiring good rear test results and ESC as either standard or optional equipment. In 2010, the Institute toughened criteria by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a good rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.
The Institute groups winners according to vehicle type and size. Lund advises consumers to keep in mind that size and weight influence crashworthiness. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford better occupant protection in serious crashes than smaller, lighter ones. Even with a Top Safety Pick, a small car isn't as crashworthy as a bigger one.
How vehicles are evaluated: The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.
Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2 instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a 5th percentile woman, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact.
In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a displacement rate of 0.2 inch per second. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio.
Rear crash protection is rated according to a 2-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry — the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man.
Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people.

Next Mazda Miata to lose weight, possibly gain a turbo
The 2012 Mazda Miata is one of the great bantamweights of the automotive industry, but even it has gained more than a few extra pounds over the years.
If reports from British car publication What Car? are to be believed, it would seem that the right folks at Mazda's R&D department have taken notice.
When asked about the next Mazda MX-5 Miata, Hirotaka Kanazawa, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of R&D, told What Car?, "'We will return to the original. It will be lightweight and the cost will be lightweight too. It will be easy to handle and fun to drive."
The original Miata weighed a scant 2,100 pounds, so the next Miata will need to shave over 300 pounds from the current generation to make weight. And Mazda will need to do that without getting too far from the current roadster's $23,190 starting price, which rules out most lightweight exotic materials, so we're expecting the next Miata to simply be smaller than the third-generation model and perhaps closer to the overall dimensions of the first or second generation.
However, the most interesting tidbit is that the next Miata, which is expected to arrive in 2014, could be powered by a small-displacement turbocharged engine taking advantage of Mazda's Skyactiv suite of efficiency technologies rather than a naturally aspirated one. This would be a Miata first. However, before you go shouting "MOAR POWA," remember that this is a return to form for the roadster, so expect a rev-happy and high-efficiency mill displacing about 1.3 liters. Mazda will, no doubt be placing an emphasis on "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" here, so expect it to be a tire burner. (Although, Mazda could still switch gears and decide to offer a high-output version for enthusiasts. 2014 Mazdaspeed MX-5, anyone?)

Mazda Takeri Carries the Kodo Standard Forward
At the Tokyo auto show this week, Mazda unveiled the Takeri concept car, the clearest indication yet from the automaker of the future shape of the Mazda 6 midsize sedan.
While the Mazda 3 has persisted and evolved as an attractive and stylish alternative to rivals of the same size, the Mazda 6 has stood out less and been overshadowed, particularly in the American marketplace, by big sellers like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima.
Mazda intends to make the new car a rival for eye and checkbook using the automaker’s new Kodo design language. After the CX-5 crossover, which grew out of the Minagi concept, the Mazda 6 is expected to be the next vehicle to carry the new look.
Kodo was originally articulated by the Shinari concept car, shown in Milan in August 2010. The Mazda design chief Ikuo Maeda defined Kodo as “soul of motion.”
The Kodo theme involves muscular forms and flowing profiles, conveying a sense of compressed energy and power. By contrast, the earlier, more passive and natural language, called Nagare, was based on waves.
Mr. Maeda has said that Kodo evoked the power of a crouching feline predator, like a panther or leopard, and Mazda’s description of the Takeri referred to the shoulder of a cheetah, poised to pounce.
The more muscular and biological shapes of the new car, as well as the evocations of fierce cats, might be raising eyebrows at Jaguar.
That said, Kodo has been dialed back a bit from the more sensuous Shinari, but the elements are there. A bold metallic band links the bottom of the Takeri’s angular, six-pointed grille with the centers of the headlamps. The piece, which Mazda calls a signature wing, radiates the energy of a quick stroke of calligraphy. It makes the lamps appear to be aggressive eyes. The raised fenders are joined by a narrowed, Coke-bottle waist, in a wedge shape.
The Takeri evokes, but also moves beyond, the exaggerated front fender theme of the discontinued RX-7 sports car, which was suggestive of an open-wheel racecar. Though no such news came out of the Tokyo show, a successor to the RX-7 was a priority for Mr. Maeda, he has said. He is the son of Matasaburo Maeda, who designed the first generation of the RX-7 in the 1970s.

Five Ways to Get Rid of Leftover Turkey
Courtesy of Fieldandstream's Website
Despite the fact that you’ve been eating turkey sandwiches every day since Friday, you still might have some Thanksgiving bird left in the fridge. If so, here are five ideas for using up those last few slices for dinner tonight. If you just can’t bear the thought of another day of turkey, throw what’s left in the freezer and make one of these recipes some time in the coming months.
2. From The New York Times, a spicy take on turkey soup.
3. Feed it to the dogs, with a fun recipe for turkey and cranberry dog treats.
4. A classic turkey pot pie like the one pictured here.
5. Try this Turkey Tetrazzini recipe:
Ingredients:
2-3 cups chopped, cooked turkey
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
1 Tbsp., plus 1 cup milk or table cream
3-4 Tbsp. butter
1 onion, diced
1-2 cups sliced mushrooms
1 green pepper, diced
Worcestershire sauce
1 cup turkey broth
1 lb. spaghetti, cooked al dente
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix the cornstarch with 1 tbsp. milk and set aside. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. When the butter foams, add the onion and sauté until translucent, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and peppers, stirring until softened. Add several dashes of Worcestershire.
Stir in 1 cup of milk and the turkey broth to skillet. Add the milk/cornstarch mix and simmer until thickened, as if making gravy.
Add the turkey and cooked spaghetti to 3-quart casserole or other ovenproof dish. Pour the sauce over turkey-spaghetti mixture, along with the cheddar cheese, stirring to coat. Add the Parmesan over the top of the casserole and bake for about 20 to 30 minutes, or until mixture is bubbling.

ALL-NEW 2013 MAZDA CX-5 MAKES ITS NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT IN LOS ANGELES
Courtesy of Mazda USA Media
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today unveiled its all-new 2013 CX-5 compact SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The North American debut is the first Mazda to fully encompass SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, the brand's engineering-focused philosophy toward improving all-around vehicle efficiency; the segment newcomer also offers best-in-class fuel economy. A sneak peek into Mazda's new generation of vehicles, CX-5 embodies the perfect balance between the best of all worlds: captivating design, dynamic handling, unexpected efficiency, flexible functionality and first-class safety, with a dash of Zoom-Zoom.
"The 2013 CX-5 is the vehicle compact SUV shoppers have been asking for - that only Mazda can build," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "Entering an extremely competitive segment, the all-new CX-5 has to offer more than just flash and features, but also has to perform and provide consumers with the dynamic response they've come to expect from Mazda - and it does. With its SKYACTIV underpinnings and best-in-class fuel economy, CX-5 proves that fun needn't be sacrificed for fuel efficiency and that compact doesn't equate compromise."
Reach for the Sky
As the new kid on the block, the 2013 CX-5 had to do more than simply dress to impress on its first day in class. The vehicle needed to walk and talk that it belonged with its peers, but at the same time still evoke a level of emotional connection and driving passion worthy of the Mazda badge. This begins with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.
Developed solely by Mazda, SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is not a package or trim level, but an all-encompassing, deeply embedded philosophy that obtaining more power, torque and miles per gallon does not need to come at the expense of fuel economy, design and safety. Its first application was in Mazda's best-selling Mazda3, refreshed for 2012 with a SKYACTIV engine and transmissions. CX-5 is the first vehicle to receive all SKYACTIV components
Under an expansive hood lies the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine. At 13:1, SKYACTIV-G features the world's highest compression ratio for a mass-produced car. With its all-new 4-2-1 exhaust system, the 2013 CX-5 delivers 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, torque is measured at 150 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm and redline is reached at 6500 rpm. With a choice of transmissions in either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic, a 2,000-pound towing capacity and an optional all-wheel drive, the 2013 CX-5 truly offers a little of everything for everyone.
And the competition is not nearly as competitive to the CX-5's best-in-class fuel economy. Compared to the compact SUV segment's other gasoline-power makes and models, the CX-5 is not afraid to make a statement by matching the best highway figures and trumping the competitive set's city mileage. Estimated EPA fuel economy for the CX-5 is 26 city/33 highway for a front-wheel drive equipped with SKYACTIV-MT. When equipped with SKYACTIV-Drive, the front-wheel drive model garners 26 city/32 highway. The all-wheel drive version, only available with SKYACTIV-Drive, also is a fuel sipper with an EPA rating of 25 city/30 highway.
Striking Style
A new "signature wing" front grille dominates the front fascia. Its black elongated trapezoidal pattern adds masculine depth, while wing-shaped, wraparound headlamps extend out, seemingly flirting a head-turning "hello" to passersby. This is KODO.
KODO, or "Soul of Motion," is a design language inspired by nature which evokes how both startling beauty and immense power can be captured within a single motion. First unveiled in 2010 on the SHINARI concept car, a long and lean four-door sports coupe, and then on the MINAGI concept SUV earlier this year, from which CX-5 is based, KODO exemplifies the future direction of Mazda's striking sheet metal strokes.
The CX-5's sculptured body features taut, compact lines. Shapely front and rear fenders hug the sporty SUV's available 17- and 19-inch rubber-and-rim packages, projecting a wide, low-slung stance. A sweeping swoosh line bridges the four corners with sleek, artistic expression. Topside, a pronounced crease begins at the A-pillar and darts sharply across the side panels, eventually wrapping itself around stylized tail lamps. The sharply raked A-pillar is matched by the angles of the C-pillar and rear window, topping an aggressive profile which, at the same time, affords all occupants one of the widest fields of view in the segment.
All these cuts in the sheet metal, the rounded surfaces and edgy creases, are as much for finesse as they are for function. With a targeted coefficient of drag of 0.33, the CX-5 aims to be the most aerodynamic compact SUV in the field. Not just for Zoom-Zoom but for the added benefit of improving fuel economy.
Sensible Purpose
Just as the exterior stirs the soul, the CX-5's interior sparks the senses. Intuitive, with a multitude of frequently-used controls within reach, there is nothing you can't do while ensconced in utmost comfort. Long and luxury-laced, the CX-5 sits on a segment-leading 106.3-inch wheelbase, seats five and offers a cabin that is undeniably flexible in order to accommodate the demands of today's active lifestyles of all work and all play.
Rear cargo room is not only cavernous but clever. With a three-piece independent 40/20/40-split fold-flat second row, the CX-5 shows that whatever is thrown its way, it will catch - with room left to spare. A single-action topside button releases the left- and right-side seats to fold down while a looped handle frees the middle seat, which also folds flat - a segment first.
While the driver delights in all the glee of driving one of the most dynamically fun and satisfying compact SUVs on the road, there is no reason passengers can't be allowed to enjoy the ride as well. Amongst the roomiest cabins in the segment, legroom for the second row is ample at 39.3 inches with an equally generous knee clearance of 2.6 inches. The wide cavity under the front seats also offers abundant rear passenger foot space and can be used as additional cargo room to hide personal belongings. Rear headroom is 39.0 inches for vehicles not equipped with a moonroof.
Up front, both the driver and passenger can enjoy 40.1 inches of headroom (when not equipped with a moonroof), 57.5 inches for the broadest of shoulders and 41.0 inches to stretch their legs. Six- and eight-way power-adjustable seats will be standard on all but the entry-level models.
Whether battling those curvaceous roads alone or rolling through town with a full house, commanding the sound studio on wheels is easily within reach for either the driver or front passenger. An all-new 5.8-inch touch screen becomes the center of attention with intuitive phone, audio and navigation functions. Streamlined steering wheel controls also enable a more straightforward operation of the infotainment system. Mazda's advanced keyless entry system and push-button start get the CX-5 going.
Other available features on the all-new 2013 CX-5 include Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity and iPod® audio playback. A nine-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® Surround Sound system with AudioPilot® was jointly developed with Mazda to please even the most discerning music enthusiasts. The CX-5 also is available with HD RadioTM Technology, a subscription-free digital AM and FM broadcast radio service which provides crystal-clear sound, on-screen information and additional programming choices via HD2 and HD3 channels.
In a first-time partnership with Mazda in North America, a TomTom® technology-based navigation system also will be offered and features premium North American maps, advanced lane guidance, intuitive voice recognition and real-time traffic. USB and auxiliary jack connections can be found in the center console storage bin and be accessed via the infotainment touch screen.
Secure in Safety
While safety never comes second, having the peace of mind to never have to worry about it in the first place is just as important. Being a compact SUV that doesn't compromise, CX-5's SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis ensure a vehicle structure as reinforced and quiet as it is rigid and absorbs impacts.
Re-examining the suspension and steering systems, the lightweight construction of the SKYACTIV-Chassis includes a front strut suspension and a multi-link rear format along with an assortment of design changes. Precise and predictable, drivers will feel secure in a vehicle that reacts as they react and balances agility, stability, comfort and safety.
The SKYACTIV-Body is comprised of 61 percent high-tensile steel, creating a lighter, stronger body with superior handling. As a result, the overall structure is eight percent lighter than previous Mazda models. The all-new CX-5 also has the distinction of being the first vehicle ever to utilize 1,800MPa ultra-high tensile steel in manufacturing. Mazda's New Takeri Concept Car Set to Debut at 42nd Tokyo Motor Show
Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the global premiere of the Mazda TAKERI next-generation midsize sedan concept car at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show. The show will also see the Japanese debut of the new CX-5 crossover SUV outfitted with the complete range of Mazda’s breakthrough SkyActiv technology, as well as other new technologies and production models.
The 2011 Tokyo Motor Show will run from December 1-3 at theTokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center). Mazda’s theme for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show is “Environmental Technology, Pushing the Boundaries of the Emotion of Motion.”
The Mazda TAKERI takes advantage of Mazda’s new design language, “KODO – Soul of Motion,” to bring a new level of strength and allure to sedan styling. The TAKERI features SkyActiv technology, including the efficient and powerful new SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine, to deliver dynamic performance and a comfortable ride. The combination of SkyActiv technology and other technology features, such as i-stop, Mazda’s idling stop system, and a new regenerative braking system, enable the Mazda TAKERI to achieve exceptional fuel economy.
The regenerative braking system efficiently converts kinetic energy to electricity during deceleration, stores it in capacitors, and then uses it to power the vehicle’s electric equipment, thereby reducing load on the engine and saving fuel. The regenerative braking system represents Step Two of Mazda’s Building Block Strategy. After renewing existing technologies, such as engines and bodies, Step One of the Building Block Strategy is idling stop technology (i-stop), Step Two is regenerative braking technology, and Step Three is electric drive technology (hybrid, etc.).

Mazda3 Makes Forbes' 2011 Best Cars for Commuters List and Russell & Smith Mazda of Houston, TX Couldn't Be More Pleased
Houston, TX (PRWEB) November 08, 2011
At Russell & Smith Mazda in Houston, Texas the mood couldn't be brighter as the team there proudly acknowledges the accolades over the fact that the 2011 Mazda3 has made the Forbes' 2011 Best Cars for Commuters list. This is a great honor to go with a great car. The Mazda3 was given a total 85.5 scoring derived from a number of factors including highway miles per gallon and one point for each inch of space available. Forbes compiles their list of contenders from new vehicles listed as Consumer Reports' "Recommended Picks" for this year. Recommended picks have average or better predicted reliability and meet Consumer Reports' safety standards. They must also have performed well in accelerating, braking, handling, comfort, and other user-oriented tests. The Mazda3 is a 4-cylinder sedan i touring vehicle in the small car class with 4.5 inches of head room and 41 inches of leg room that gets an impressive 40 mpg on the highway and received a total score of 85.5 in Forbes' scoring. Russell & Smith Mazda also has used cars in Houston and used trucks in Houston available for consumers to choose from on their lot when looking for a used Mazda in Houston.
In order for Russell & Smith Mazda to remain competitive in their field their online website allows consumers to peruse the available stock in their massive inventory from the comfort of any PC with relative ease thereby skipping all the driving around associated with the normal car buying experience. Their stellar website makes it easier than ever to find the new or used vehicle that any customer may have in mind without ever leaving home, thus enabling them to narrow down the field, as it were, allowing them to do the necessary price comparison shopping without the added hassle of spending time in traffic and money on gas and opening up the opportunity to quite possibly receiving an incentive in the form of a special online sale price. This along with reduced APR rates for qualified buyers could result in significant savings for savvy shoppers. The Russell & Smith dealership has a great variety of different used Mazdas available such as a used Mazda CX-7 in Houston or a used Mazda CX-9 in Houston in a variety of colors. All of this can be just a mouse click away. And when it comes time to take a test drive, one of Russell & Smith's friendly and knowledgeable sales team can answer any questions potential car buyers may have about the vehicle of their choosing.
Russell & Smith Mazda also maintains their competitive edge by partnering up with First in Results SEO Marketing, the cutting edge Search Engine Optimization company that many leading car dealerships in the country turn to in order to keep competitive in the sales industry. Through the use of keywords and SEO Theodore Price, president of First in Results, is able to help otherwise ordinary dealerships become extraordinary movers and shakers in the new and used car sales industry ensuring results that even the least competitive dealerships have seen turn their entire business around even in these slow economic times and enabling them to see continued success and stay on top during it all. This often results in dealerships' ability to pass considerable savings onto consumers making it a win-win situation for everybody. So if a car shopper residing in the Houston area is in the market for a new or used Mazda, especially those commuters, or any used vehicle, Russell & Smith Mazda is quite probably the place to be for all car shopping needs, professional and friendly service, and a knowledgeable sales staff ready to help answer questions and get consumers in the car of their choice.

Mazda Showcases Grand Ideas In Small Cars At 2011 SEMA Show With "Green" Roadster and Tiny Turbo
- Low-Emissions, Lightweight MX-5 Spyder and MAZDASPEED-Infused Turbo2
Headline Mazda’s Lineup at Annual Automotive Aftermarket Trade Show -
LAS VEGAS (November 1, 2011) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is known for its Zoom-Zoom dynamism, which is evident in the brand’s lineup of distinct design and divine drivability, and brings to this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show a fleet of vehicles highlighting Mazda’s motorsports heritage, efficiency aspirations and daily-driver potential.
“There is no limit to one’s imagination and when applying that to the already dynamic design and punchy performance of Mazda vehicles, the end result is nothing short of a well-crafted vision,” said Derek Jenkins, director, MNAO Design. “And because the stock models are extraordinarily versatile, who’s to say some elements of these SEMA concepts can’t be ready for public consumption?”
MX-5 Spyder
Beloved worldwide as the best-selling two-seat roadster in the world, with a secure spot in Guinness World Records to boot, the MX-5 Miata is the vehicle motorsports enthusiasts love to drive on the weekday streets of suburbia and the weekend roads of race tracks nationwide.
Well-known is the MX-5’s single-hand-operation soft-top and segment-best 12-second Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) that the MX-5 Spyder is a re-imagination of the roadster and features a sweeping, single-panel grenadine-red soft-top made by Haartz Corporation. Its design, a collaborative effort between MNAO Design and Magna Car Top Systems, offers an even lower slung stance of the MX-5 without sacrificing headroom. Fitted onto the roadster’s already sleek and sexy “look at me” body style, the MX-5 Spyder has been painted Stratosphere White and features a Yokohama rubber-and-rims set of AO48 225/45R17 performance tires matched with 17-inch, 10-spoke ADVAN RS wheels in Gun Metal Metallic. But as the adage goes, there is more than meets the eye.
Under the hood is where the vehicle’s exterior treat matches wits with an interior trick. Powered by Mazda’s ever-dependable MZR 2.0-liter engine, the MX-5 Spyder is fueled by BP’s isobutanol. The significance? The biofuel supports Mazda’s mantra of “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom,” which means crafting exciting, fun-to-drive vehicles that create minimal environmental impact. A testament to this philosophy is the Mazda/Dyson Racing entry in the American Le Mans Series. The #16 LMP1Lola vehicle features a turbocharged MZR-R 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, runs on isobutanol and beat competing larger-block V-12s to win the manufacturer, team and drivers championships for the 2011 racing season. Mazda also was given the Michelin® Green X® Challenge at the Baltimore Grand Prix, a distinction awarded to category cars that prove to be the “cleanest, fastest, most efficient” in the race.
Although similar to how ethanol is produced from agricultural feedstock, isobutanol does not compromise vehicle performance for the sake of fuel economy and can be added to the current fuel distribution infrastructure without requiring modifications in blending facilities, storage tanks and retail station pumps. Isobutanol’s compatibility with existing technology and infrastructures is a significant step toward meeting the demand in renewable fuels for transportation.
Another fuel-saving, engine-efficient feature of the MX-5 Spyder is a lightweight lithium-ion racing battery made by Braille Battery. The lead-free advanced battery system is RoHS compliant and constructed of non-hazardous materials, has a high charge retention and offers a longer life cycle than comparable standard batteries. A Racing Beat header, intake and exhaust muffler as well as a MAZDASPEED coil over kit and Brembo brakes complete the vehicle’s mechanics.
The cabin area is accentuated by tanned Saddle black-leather seats with Aqua leather accents and Coal Ash suede inserts. Subtle Spider Silk Gray Metallic-colored trim pieces on the doors and dash panels tastefully adorn the mostly black interior, which is finished off with customized floor mats by Star West. A MAZDASPEED short-throw shifter adds a tasty reminder to the MX-5’s motorsports pedigree.
Turbo2
When introduced to the North American market in 2010, the Mazda2 was referred to as Zoom-Zoom Concentrated. The Turbo2 can almost be defined as Zoom-Zoom Concentrated, Extra Strength. Outfitted with a MAZDASPEED3 MZR 2.3-liter Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) turbo engine, the Turbo2 is as potent as it is practical.
Start the engine and the subcompact cat doesn’t purr – it growls. Its sinister snarl pulsates through the cockpit and injects itself into your rev-happy feet. A five-passenger subcompact with flexible storage and seating capacity, the Turbo2 leaves a small footprint but lives big.
Always known as the spunky little sport of the Mazda lineup, the Turbo2 adds to the Mazda2’s toss-me-around-and-you’ll-still-be-grinning attitude with an HR coil over suspension kit, Corksport sway bars and customized Brembo front brakes with 13-inch ventilated and slotted rotors. The rear brakes remain Mazda stock parts. Yokohama ADVAN Neova 215/40R17 performance tires are mounted onto shiny black 17-inch OZ Racing wheels.
The vibrant Sonic White tri-coat exterior features Brilliant Black on the lower panels, wheel arches, side skirts and lower front fascia. Unique bright green and neon yellow graphics and trim pieces further highlight the Turbo2’s compact and svelte physique. The exterior’s sunshine happy theme follows through into an interior commanded by Katzin black leather seats featuring Baracuda Yellow perforated leather inserts and Sunrise Yellow seat piping. Customized floor mats are by Star West and the dash is outfitted with an AiM Pista MXL digital racing performance and data acquisition display.
MX-5 Super20
Introduced during last year’s SEMA Show, the MX-5 Super20 is back and with a new ‘do, so to speak. Now blazing in a Hyper Orange Mica exterior treatment, the MX-5 Super20 retains its darker, edgier Mr. Hyde attitude in comparison to its more sociable Dr. Jekyll MX-5 Miata persona.
With its soft-top replaced with a stationary glossy black hardtop, and matching orange stripes, the MX-5 Super20’s interior also was modified and fitted with a color-matched roll bar, lending to a Grand Touring-inspired feel and function. The black leather seats feature suede seat inserts and channel stitching, which provide improved grip for drivers. Orange contrast stitching adds the finishing touch to the sporty seat profile.
Additional modifications include a DPTune reflashed ECU, Racing Beat 304-stainless steel header and exhaust, Racing Beat hollow front and rear anti-roll bars, ACT organic street clutch, MAZDASPEED coil overs and a shock tower brace, Power Slot slotted brake rotors, StopTech stainless steel brake lines and street performance brake pads, SpeedSource front brake ducts, black 16-inch Enkei RPF1 twin-spoke racing wheels, Toyo Proxes RA-1 245/45ZR16 high-performance tires and 20mm H&R Track+ bolt-on wheel spacers in the rear with 15mm Sparco wheel spacers in the front.
3dCarbon Mazda2
Sharing only the colorful spirit of green with its Turbo2 SEMA Show sibling, the 3dCarbon Mazda2 has an identity all its own. Its 3dCarbon/Air Design body kit is manufactured in high-pressure polyurethane injection molding and either pre-primer or pre-painted in all-factory colors. The customized body kit includes a front air dam, side skirts, a rear lower diffuser and Mazda2 Touring-spec upper rear spoiler.
The Spirited Green Metallic paint is further styled with a vinyl graphic design courtesy of Sticky Fingers Design. With darkly tinted windows, the small statured vehicle simply pops. 3M Color Stable Metal-Free Window Film is used on the side and rear windows while the front windshield features 3M Crystalline Nanofilm.
An Eibach® Springs Pro-Kit improves handling as well as visual appeal. Eighteen-inch FIVE:AD S6:F Gunmetal wheels wrapped with Yokohama S.drive 215/35R18 tires add the finishing touch.
Mazda5 Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (MRLS) Support Vehicle
Infamous as a practically perfect people-hauler and un-famous as a race track icon, the Mazda5 MRLS Support Vehicle proves that mini-minivans can go racing, too. Developed by Mazda Design, this particular Mazda5 features lowering springs with height-adjustable perches – ideal for custom tuning to any performance situation. Menacing flat-black-painted 19-inch Mazda
RX-8 R3-spec forged aluminum wheels add to the street-turned-track look, complete with MRLS logo orange dots. Custom graphics highlighting the world-famous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca racing circuit emblazon the Mazda5’s landscape as a nod to the orange theme continues – from the MRLS logo on the front doors, icons on the MRLS track map and a striking line along the side skirts – complete the racy package.

They say good things come in threes, and that will certainly be the case with the 2012 Mazda3.
They say good things come in threes, and that will certainly be the case with the 2012 Mazda3. The best-selling model in the Mazda lineup was significantly refreshed for the new model year, with the lineup adding the automaker’s breakthrough Skyactiv powertrain technology while removing hundreds of dollars from its starting price.
It all starts with the Mazda3 i SV sedan, with an MSRP of $15,200—$600 less than the 2011 model. Introducing the new look of the Mazda3 roster, the car is thoroughly restyled inside and out, with a revised front fascia and grille, new cloth seats, and a bold, black cabin. Upgrading to the Mazda3 i Sport sedan, with remote start and other athletic enhancements, brings a starting price of $16,845. Both sedans holster Mazda’s proven MZR 2.0-liter I4 engine.
The Mazda3 i Touring models start at $18,450 for the sedan and $18,950 for the five-door hatchback—a starting point that’s more than $1,000 lower than the least-expensive 2011 five-door. More importantly, Mazda’s Skyactiv powertrain makes its U.S. debut—as standard equipment—on this pair of 3’s. This innovative gas-only I4 can be mated to one of two Skyactiv transmissions, either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, to produce up to 5 percent more horsepower, 10 percent more peak torque, and 15 percent more low- to mid-range torque than the similarly sized MSR engine. Yet at the same time, it delivers more than 20 percent better fuel efficiency: The sedan is expected to reach 40 mpg highway, with the hatchback achieving 39 mpg. Other standard and available equipment on the Mazda3 i Touring includes:
- All-new 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels
- A leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel
- Rain-sensing windshield wipers
- Self-leveling bi-xenon headlights
- Automatic headlights
- Mazda’s Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS)
- A power moonroof
- A premium Bose sound system
Moving up to the Grand Touring trim level, the Mazda3 i sedan and hatchback have MSRPs of $22,300 and $22,800, respectively, as well as even more uplevel amenities. Here, standard equipment includes a moonroof and 10-speaker Bose Surround Sound audio setup, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and a full-color navigation system. Also available: The segment’s only blind-spot monitoring system.
The Mazda3 s Touring and Grand Touring configurations, featuring a 167-hp MZR 2.5-liter engine as well as new 17-inch wheels, push-button start, dual-zone climate controls and more, are priced from $21,300 for the sedan and $21,800 for the hatchback.
At the top of the Mazda3 range is the dynamic MAZDASPEED3, which showcases a long list of comfort and convenience content along with a wide range of performance enhancers, including:
- A Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) 2.3-liter engine, capable of 263 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque
- A sport-tuned exhaust
- 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
- Larger front brakes
- Independent, sport-tuned front and rear suspensions
- A limited-slip differential with the automaker’s Advanced Torque Manage System
- Larger front and rear stabilizer bars
- Sport seats
- MAZDASPEED3-specific fenders, front fascia and hood
“The Mazda3 is the core of the Mazda line-up and continues to be the standard by which all other compact cars are measured,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. “Because of the importance of this critical vehicle to Mazda sales success, we chose to debut our revolutionary Skyactiv Technology in Mazda3, as well as bring the i SV model to market at a lower starting MSRP than the previous year.”
