Mazda Puts MX-5 GT Concept Up For Comment At Goodwood

Mazda_post

Would you like to see a more powerful, sportier-looking, better-handling Mazda MX-5? Then sound off--Mazda wants to hear feedback on its MX-5 GT Concept it's showing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year.

With 205 horsepower at the crank from its normally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder (a 33-horsepower upgrade from the production MX-5), an adjustable suspension, front splitter, a central dual tail pipe, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler, plus a sportier exhaust system, Recaro seats, and carbon fiber trim, the MX-5 GT Concept sounds like exactly what we've been waiting for.

The car will make its debut at the Festival of Speed on June 28, alongside the Takeri sedan and CX-5. Between stints on the show stand, however, the MX-5 GT Concept will take a run up Goodwood Hill to show it doesn't just look like its racing counterparts, but drives like them too.

Mazda claims the MX-5 GT is capable of 160 mph top speed and 0-60 mph in just three seconds--incredible figures for a 205-horsepower car, hinting that the MX-5 GT Concept is much, much lighter than you might expect.

Mazda Announces SkyActiv-D Clean Diesel Engine for 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans

Mazda_post

Mazda Motorsports today announced that it will sell racing versions of its new SKYACTIV-D CLEAN DIESEL engines to teams competing in the Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) class of racing's greatest endurance challenge - the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  The Le Mans engine program will make its debut at the 2013 running of the race.  Mazda was the first - and to this day, remains the only - Asian manufacturer to score an overall win at the race, in 1991.

"This reopens our love affair with Le Mans," said Jay Amestoy, Vice President of Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). "In 1991 we made history, winning with rotary technology.  Now we're looking to return to the winner's circle with what we believe will be the most advanced and cleanest production-based powerplant the sport has ever seen.  We'll do it in current Mazda style, with engines being available for sale to European and U.S. customers competing in the LMP2 class for both the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS)."

The engines are being developed jointly by Mazda Motor Corporation, Mazda North American Operations and SpeedSource Race Engineering.  Dyno testing has already begun and on-track testing begins in late 2012.

The engines will be stock-block Mazda SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder, dual-stage turbocharged powerplants.  According to John Doonan, MNAO's Director of Mazda Motorsports, "The engines will deliver outstanding performance and fuel economy coupled with the kind of quality, durability and reliability needed to produce great street cars and win endurance races."

Mazda 5

Crossover

Starts at $19,625
MPG: 21 city/28 highway

This one-of-a-kind vehicle has enough moxie to make you forget you're a parent (at least when the kids drift off for a nap). It handles like a small car, yet it's practical, with seating for six. All three rows have cup holders. A clever activity table between the plush second-row captain's chairs stows out of sight when you don't need it, and the third-row seats fold into the floor for extra space.

Features: Steering-wheel audio controls standard, 6 passenger capacity, 4 car-seat capacity

Fiat-Mazda Relationship Could Grow Beyond Sports Coupe

Mazda_post

Following news about Mazda and Fiat working together to build a new Miata and Alfa Romeo coupe, Fiat Chief Executive  Sergio Marchionne hinted that the Fiat-Mazda relationship has potential to expand even further.

During a tour of the Belvidere, Illinois plant, where the Dodge Dart will be built, Marchionne talked to reporters a bit more about the future of Fiat and Mazda’s collaboration.

“I would be willing to build Mazdas anywhere in the world where we have capacity, including Chrysler plants,” said Marchionne.

Recently Mazda has slowed down production at it’s Flat Rock plant in Detroit (which is partly owned by Ford) and Marchionne clearly sees the opportunity to further the Fiat-Mazda partnership.

Marchionne also mentioned that the Belvidere plant can accommodate one more car. Whether that car is a Fiat, Chrysler or Mazda, is yet to be seen.
