In a recent survey of “Eco Cars” in Japan, Mazda’s recently updated Demio (aka Mazda2) came out on top. The Demio was deemed more eco-friendly than even the Toyota Prius thanks to its ultra fuel-efficient 1.3-liter SKYACTIV gasoline engine.
The SC-Abeam Consulting survey asked 500 respondents to choose from a pool of 24 hybrid and fuel-efficient gasoline engine cars. No EVs were included in the survey pool. The Demio bested the Prius and the Daihatsu e:S kei car as the most eco-friendly of the bunch.
Japanese car buyers have a reputation as being early adopters of new technology and gadgets. However, in the wake of March’s earthquake, Japanese consumers are increasingly wary of paying an extra cost for a complex hybrid system. With SKYACTIV, Mazda’s Demio is capable delivering hybrid-like fuel economy without the cost of a hybrid system.
The Mazda Demio starts at around $14,950 U.S. at the current exchange rate. It also yields 58.8 miles per gallon on Japan’s JC08 evaluation cycle.
In a country that craves innovative technology, it appears that consumers still value the performance of a traditional gasoline powertrain if it can deliver high mileage. Similar SKYACTIV technology will soon be available to U.S. consumers in the updated 2012 Mazda3.
